City explorations in Sri Lanka: how to explore Colombo, Kandy, Galle Fort, Jaffna and Anuradhapura, how long to stay in each and local etiquette tips.

Sri Lanka's cities are small, walkable and very different from each other. Colombo is the busy, modern capital with colonial streets and markets, Kandy is the cultural heart of the hill country, Galle Fort is a living Dutch-era town inside sea walls, and Jaffna has a distinct Tamil culture of its own. A day or two in each, on foot and by tuk-tuk, gives you a far richer picture of the island than beaches and parks alone.
| City | Time needed | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Colombo | 1 to 2 days | Markets, food, museums, modern Sri Lanka |
| Kandy | 2 days | Temples, culture, gateway to the hill country |
| Galle | 1 to 2 days | Colonial architecture, cafés, ramparts at sunset |
| Jaffna | 2 to 3 days | Tamil culture, temples, islands |
| Anuradhapura | 1 to 2 days | Ancient stupas and pilgrimage sites |
All five cities can be explored independently with an offline map. A local guide adds a lot in Colombo's Pettah, where the streets are confusing and the stories behind the shops are the point, and in Jaffna, where the history of the war and the city's recovery is easier to understand with someone who lived through it. Tuk-tuks are everywhere. In Colombo and Kandy, ride-hailing apps such as PickMe and Uber are widely used and save you haggling. Otherwise, agree the fare before you get in, or ask for a metered tuk-tuk in Colombo. Galle Fort and central Kandy are best on foot.
Dress modestly for temples, mosques and kovils: cover shoulders and knees, and remove shoes and hats. At the Temple of the Tooth, white or light clothing is appreciated. Never pose for photos with your back to a Buddha statue, and do not touch monks. At Hindu temples in Jaffna, men are often asked to remove their shirts before entering the inner shrine.
Colombo, Galle and Kandy are pleasant from December to April. Jaffna and Anuradhapura are hot and dry for much of the year, so plan city walks for early morning and late afternoon. Check local festival dates, because Kandy in August and Jaffna during the Nallur festival fill up fast.
In Colombo, stay in Fort, Kollupitiya or Cinnamon Gardens to be close to the sights. In Kandy, stay near the lake or on the hills above it. In Galle, stay inside the fort. Browse hotels and guesthouses for each city on VisitLanka.

For culture and scenery, Kandy. Colombo is better for food, shopping and as a first or last night near the airport.

Yes, if you have at least two or three days. Its temples, food, islands and history feel very different from the south of the island.
