The most important Hindu temple in northern Sri Lanka, dedicated to Lord Murugan. The original temple was founded in 948 and the present one built in 1734, with a tall golden gopuram at the entrance. Its 25-day annual festival, usually in August and September, ends with the chariot procession and draws pilgrims from across Sri Lanka and abroad.

Tips

Men must remove their shirts before entering; everyone leaves shoes outside. Shoulders and knees covered. Photography inside the inner temple is not allowed. Free; donations welcome.
