Things to do in Ella: Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak and Ella Rock hikes, Ravana Falls, plus how to get there by road or rail and the best time to go.

Ella is a small hill town in Badulla District, Uva Province, about 200 km east of Colombo and 1,041 m up. It sits at the top of the Ella Gap, a notch in the hills with views south across the plains. Most things to do in Ella are on foot: a 1919 railway viaduct, two short summit hikes, a roadside waterfall and a cave tied to the Ramayana. Plan on three nights. It's cooler than the lowlands but warmer and drier than Nuwara Eliya.
One honest warning: Ella is not a quiet village any more. The main strip is wall-to-wall cafes, bars and guesthouses, and the big sights fill up by mid-morning. Start early and you'll have most of them to yourself.
Nine Arch Bridge at Demodara is the picture on every Ella postcard: nine arches of stone and brick, 91 m long and 24 m high, curving between two tunnels on a jungle hillside. It's about a 30-minute walk from the main strip through tea and forest, and free to visit. A few kilometres on, at Demodara, the line loops round and passes under itself.
Little Adam's Peak (Punchi Sri Pada, 1,141 m) is the easy hike. The path climbs through tea estates east of town and reaches the first viewpoint in about 50 minutes from the trailhead. From the main strip, allow two and a half hours there and back. It's free and well marked, and the late afternoon light is the best for photos.
Ella Rock, across the valley, is the harder morning out. Allow about three hours return, with steep, loose ground near the top and a cliff edge with no rail. Go before sunrise, before the cloud settles, in proper shoes and with a torch. The paths split often, so a local tour guide saves you wandering lost in the tea.
There are more walks on our hiking and trekking page.
Ravana Falls (Ravana Ella) drops about 25 m right beside the road down to Wellawaya, roughly 6 km from town. It's free and a short tuk-tuk ride away. The falls are fullest in the wet months and can thin to a few threads in a long dry spell. Locals swim and climb here, but the rocks are slippery and the pools are deeper than they look.
Ravana Cave sits on the cliff at about 1,370 m, up a long flight of steps. Legend says King Ravana hid Sita here. The archaeology is real: excavations found signs of people living in the cave around 25,000 years ago.
North of town on the Badulla road, Dhowa Rock Temple is said to be about 2,000 years old and has a 12 m Buddha carved into the rock face and never finished. It's a working temple, so cover shoulders and knees and take off shoes and hats.
Ella is on the Colombo to Badulla railway, and the ride through the tea country is the reason many people come. It's one of Sri Lanka's best train journeys. Cyclone Ditwah damaged the line in late 2025, and in October 2026 through trains from Kandy and Colombo were still suspended. A local service was running between Nanu Oya and Badulla, stopping at Ella. Check Sri Lanka Railways before you plan around the train.
By road, Ella is about 4.5 hours from Colombo, a little over 3 hours from Galle, and 2 to 3 hours from Tissamaharama for Yala. Buses on the same routes take most of a day, so most visitors book a driver. Ella station is a 10-minute walk from the main strip, and tuk-tuks wait outside.
Stay on the main strip if you want cafes and bars on the doorstep, or along the Passara road to be close to Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam's Peak. For quiet and valley views, look at the hillside lanes such as Kirimetiya Road, a short tuk-tuk ride out. Browse places to stay in Ella, and in the busy season book a couple of weeks ahead.
Eat kottu roti, string hoppers with pol sambol and a proper rice and curry at the small family places near the station. Ella is also a good town to learn to cook Sri Lankan food in a cooking class.
The driest months are roughly January to April. Ella sits on the Uva side of the hills, so it catches less of the May to September monsoon than Nuwara Eliya, but expect heavy afternoon rain from about October to December. Mornings are the clearest time all year.
Three nights covers Nine Arch Bridge, both hikes and Ravana Falls without rushing. Two nights works if you skip Ella Rock.
Yes, if you like walking and hill views. It's busy and built up, so go for the landscape rather than the town itself.
Yes. It's about 30 minutes on foot from the main strip, mostly on tracks through tea and forest.
Ella has the better short hikes and a lively backpacker scene. Nuwara Eliya is colder and quieter, with colonial buildings and Horton Plains nearby. Many people see both on the way through the hills.
Pair Ella with Haputale and Nuwara Eliya on the way in and Yala or the south coast on the way out. Add Ella to your trip plan and see it on a map with the rest of your stops.
