Safaris in Sri Lanka: Yala, Wilpattu, Udawalawe and Minneriya compared, where to see leopards and elephants, best months, drive times and how to book a jeep.

Sri Lanka has some of the best wildlife safaris in Asia, and most parks are only a few hours from the beaches or the hill country. Yala is famous for leopards, Udawalawe for elephants year-round, Wilpattu for quiet leopard drives among lakes, and Minneriya for the Gathering, when hundreds of elephants come to the water in the dry season. Safaris are done in open jeeps with a driver and a park tracker.
| Park | Best for | Best time | Base |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yala National Park | Leopards, sloth bears, elephants | February to July | Tissamaharama and Kirinda |
| Wilpattu | Leopards, quiet drives, lakes | February to October | Anuradhapura or Wilpattu lodges |
| Udawalawe | Elephants, any time | Year-round | Udawalawe town |
| Minneriya and Kaudulla | The Gathering of elephants | About July to October | Sigiriya, Habarana |
| Bundala | Birds, flamingos, crocodiles | September to March | Tissamaharama |
| Kumana | Birds, quieter leopard country | May to September | Arugam Bay |
| Gal Oya | Elephants by boat | Varies with water levels | Gal Oya lodges |
Yala, especially Block 1, has one of the highest densities of leopards in the world. It is also the busiest park, with many jeeps at popular sightings. Wilpattu, in the north-west, has leopards too and far fewer vehicles, but its thick forest makes sightings less predictable. If seeing a leopard is the main goal, do at least two drives in Yala or Wilpattu.
Udawalawe is the most reliable park for elephants at any time of year, with herds on open grassland. From about July to October, the Gathering at Minneriya and Kaudulla brings large herds to the shrinking reservoirs, one of Asia's great wildlife sights. Which park the elephants favour changes week to week, and local jeep drivers know where to go.
Also near Udawalawe is the Elephant Transit Home, where orphaned calves are raised for release back into the wild. You watch feeding time from a viewing platform.
Most parks open around 6am and close around 6pm, with morning drives (about 6 to 10am) and afternoon drives (about 2:30 to 6pm). Mornings are cooler and better for predators. Afternoons can be great for elephants at water. Full-day safaris go deeper into the park and avoid the busy gate times, but you spend the middle of the day in the heat.
Some parks or park blocks have closed for part of the dry season in the past, especially Yala around September and October. Closures are not fixed every year, so check before you book if you are travelling in those months.
You can hire a jeep with a driver at the park gate, through your hotel, or with an operator in advance. Park tickets are paid separately at the entrance, and foreigners pay a different rate, so bring your passport. A tracker from the wildlife department usually joins the jeep.
You can find wildlife and safari operators on VisitLanka and contact jeep drivers directly.
Bring a hat, sun cream, sunglasses, water, binoculars and a dust-proof bag for your camera. Wear neutral colours. Mornings can be cool in an open jeep, so a light layer helps.
Yala and Bundala are reached from Tissamaharama, about four hours from Galle or Ella by road. Minneriya is an hour from Sigiriya, and Udawalawe sits between the south coast and the hill country. A private driver makes it easy to combine parks. Browse lodges near the parks on VisitLanka.

Yala for leopards and overall variety, Udawalawe for guaranteed elephants, and Wilpattu for a quieter, wilder feel. Many travellers do two different parks.
February to July is good for Yala and Wilpattu. July to October is the time for the elephant Gathering at Minneriya and Kaudulla.
A half-day safari is about three to four hours, either morning or afternoon. Full-day safaris run from park opening to closing.
No sighting is guaranteed, but Yala gives you one of the best chances in the world. Doing two or more drives improves your odds a lot.
Yes. Udawalawe is great for children because elephants are easy to see. Long full-day safaris can be tiring for younger kids, so choose half-day drives.
