A white stupa about 103 m tall, begun by King Dutugemunu around 140 BC and ringed by a wall of carved elephants. It is still an active place of worship and the most recognisable sight in Anuradhapura.

Walk clockwise around the stupa. The paved terrace gets very hot by midday, so go early or late. Covered by the sacred city ticket.
