The Maha Devale at Kataragama is a shrine to the god Kataragama (Skanda-Murugan), worshipped by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and the Vedda people. The sacred area beside the Menik Ganga also holds shrines to other deities and the white Kiri Vehera stupa. Evening pujas bring drumming and crowds, and the Esala festival in July or August adds processions and fire walking.
