The great northern monastery of Anuradhapura, once home to thousands of monks, centred on a stupa that rose to about 122 m. The complex includes the Samadhi Buddha statue, Kuttam Pokuna, ponds, image houses and the Abhayagiri Museum.

The shaded roads here are the best part of Anuradhapura to cycle. Cheap tuk-tuk tours often skip this area, so insist on it. The museum is charged separately.
