Kayaking and rafting in Sri Lanka: white water rafting at Kitulgala, river and lagoon kayaking, best season, safety, what to wear and how to choose an operator.

White water rafting in Sri Lanka happens mainly at Kitulgala, on the Kelani River between Colombo and the hill country. The river has grade 2 and 3 rapids over a run of about 5 to 6.5 km, which makes it a good first rafting trip and fun for experienced paddlers too. For something calmer, you can kayak on mangrove rivers, lagoons and lakes all around the coast.
Kitulgala is the rafting capital. The Kelani River runs through rainforest, with a mix of rapids and calm stretches where you can float and look around. Trips usually last one to two hours on the water, depending on water levels. Operators also offer canyoning, confidence jumps into pools and natural rock slides in side streams.
Kitulgala is also where The Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed, and the forest around it is excellent for bird watching. It sits on the road between Colombo and the hill country, about two and a half to three hours from Colombo, and is an easy stop on the way to Hatton, Adam's Peak or Nuwara Eliya.
Kitulgala's best rafting season is roughly May to December, when monsoon rain keeps the river flowing. Rafting can run year-round, but the river is dam-controlled, so water can be low in the driest months, especially around April. In very heavy rain, trips may be stopped for safety.
Yes, with a good operator. Grade 2 and 3 rapids are lively but suitable for beginners and older children. Every trip starts with a briefing on paddling commands and what to do if you fall in. You will wear a life jacket and helmet throughout.
Check that your operator has proper helmets and life jackets in your size, a trained guide in every raft, and a safety kayaker on the river. Ask about the minimum age before you book if you are travelling with children. Rafting is a paid activity, usually priced per person including gear and guide.
Wear quick-dry clothes or swimwear with a T-shirt, and secure footwear such as sports sandals with straps or old trainers. No flip-flops. Bring a change of clothes, a towel, sun cream and a dry bag. Glasses wearers should bring a strap.

Kitulgala, on the Kelani River. It is the island's main rafting centre, with grade 2 and 3 rapids.
Most trips cover about 5 to 6.5 km of river and take one to two hours on the water, depending on water levels.
Many operators allow non-swimmers on the easier runs because everyone wears a life jacket, but tell the guide beforehand. Strong swimmers will feel more at ease.
Roughly May to December, when there is enough water in the river. April can have low water.
Older children usually can, depending on the operator's minimum age and the water level that day. Ask when you book.
